// a + During 1400, the first day of December in Venice.
After the death of the doge Misier Antonio Venier, Michele Steno, procurator of the church of St Mark, was elevated as doge on the triumphal dogal throne by the form of election of the 41, and then confirmed by the people. And on his election, because he was weakened by an infirmity that he had, he stayed in his house for a short time, and the dogeship had to be left vacant, and on the ninth day of the following January, being freed from his illness, with great dignity and triumph he ascended to his palace, for which reason in Venice very noble festivities were made by all the guilds, and this was because, as I have said, before his election the city of Venice found itself in great abundance of riches and of every kind of prosperity, although after a little while much went missing, as we shall explain in due course.
